Writers’ Conference Speaker Changed

The Writers’ Conference committee learned this morning that Judith Ortiz Cofer had to undergo emergency surgery and will be unable to travel for the next couple of weeks. She is recovering but will not be able to speak at our Writers’ Conference. We are planning to reschedule her for Spring 2013.

Singer/songwriter and poet Tom Kimmel, who drew a record crowd at the conference two years ago and whom we were planning for next year’s conference, has graciously agreed to come. We have some copies of his book of poems available for purchase, and he will bring CDs to sell as well. Videos of him performing many of his songs and his poetry are also available on YouTube if you want to introduce him to your students before his appearance. He will speak about writing in general and poetry and songwriting in particular. He has also agreed to perform songs for the audience.

From students’ responses to Mrs. Cofer’s work, we expect they, like us, will be disappointed not to hear her speak. We can, however, assure everyone that the show will be a success. As a matter of fact, Calhoun’s television station recorded his appearance two years ago and broadcast it. We probably have DVDs of the program available. If you are interested, contact Sheila through email or at x2720.

Thanks for your support of the conference,
Sheila Byrd
