Oldest book in English sold

The first book printed in the English language just sold at Sotheby’s auction house for 1,082,500 GBP ($1,823,363 USD). The Recuyell of the Histories of Troye was printed by William Caxton around 1473.

From Sotheby’s:

The Recuyell of the Histories of Troye is William Caxton’s own translation of an epic romance on the ‘Matter of Troy’, Le Recueil des histoires de Troye (c. 1463-64), by Raoul Lefèvre, who was probably a chaplain to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. The Recueil is not primarily a history of the Trojan war: it covers a much longer timespan from the foundation of the city, and focuses in particular on the first and second destructions of Troy by Hercules.
